If you’re reading this, you’re either a blogger or you’re thinking about starting your first blog. And in case you didn’t know, I’ve been in this blogging game since 2008. That’s eight years of my life in front of my computer, which is actually like 16 in blogger years. I’ve seen this industry grow beyond anything I could’ve ever imagined. In the beginning, if you would’ve told me bloggers were going to make six figures and become celebrities, I would’ve told you you were out of your mind. But, that’s exactly what’s happening. On a side note, I think this might be my first time sharing blogging tips here—don’t be alarmed.
I remember when I first started blogging. I had no idea what I was doing. It was a learn-as-you-go experience. You don’t even want to know how many mistakes I made along the way. And because this industry is constantly evolving, I’m still learning every day. Today, you have conferences, websites, videos, podcasts, books, social media experts, and more to help you figure it out. And because I’ve been doing this for a minute, I’ve even been invited to share my insight on panels and sessions.
Recently, I was asked to join a blogger session at We All Grow Summit titled “All About You: Embracing Individuality in Lifestyle Blogging.” Along with three other amazing (and super stylish) bloggers, Daniela Ramirez of nanysklozet.com, Alana of alanamariestyle.blogspot.com, and Claudia of thepennycloset.com, we shared our tips on how to remain authentic and an individual as a blogger to help gain the trust of your readers. Is this really that important? In my opinion, it is if your goal is to get people to read your blog and share your content.
The session went great and I got a lot of positive feedback about the tips I shared. So, I wanted to share them here with you. Remember, these are just a few things I’ve learned along the way. Feel free to keep them in mind along your blogging journey.
IN THE BEGINNING
-Be genuine. Don’t pass yourself off as someone else. Just be yourself.
-Open yourself up to learning more. Keep your mind open and be willing to educate yourself.
-Don’t be discouraged. There will be ups and downs. Learn from these experiences. Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers.
WATCH YOUR BLOG BLOOM
-Allow the positive changes to happen. Open your heart and embrace it.
-Follow blog trends, but make them your own. Be creative and inject your style and personality into all you do.
GROW YOUR “BRAND”
-Invest in yourself. When financially able: attend conferences, cameras and equipment, business cards, designing your blog etc…
-Don’t be afraid to promote yourself. Be your own cheerleader. Just do it with good intentions.
EVOLVING INTO SOMETHING MORE
-Change is good and will happen over time.
-Fear is normal. Just don’t allow it to overcome and destroy you and your mission.
-Move into a natural direction. Don’t force anything and make sure to follow your instincts.
MAINTAIN WHO YOU ARE
-Go back to the beginning. Who is the person who started the blog? Why did you start it?
-Don’t allow the pressure from brands/readers to change your life or your style. This is your space. Do what you want and makes you happy.
-What is it all worth to you? What are you hoping to gain or accomplish with your blog?
-You might lose some readers or supporters along the way, but in the end it will be worth it.
