Being a native from Southern California is a true blessing. I can’t imagine another place I’d rather be from. I mean, where else can you visit the beaches, mountains, and the desert in one day? I’m serious. I can say that I’ve actually done this. And it’s all thanks to Kia and their latest Ride & Drive event that started in San Diego of all places. I had a chance to test drive the all new 2017 Kia Sportage and see parts of the surrounding area that I’ve never been to before. This compact crossover was the perfect companion on this much-needed road trip!
OK, so it’s been a year since I’ve been in or around San Diego. The last time I was here…let’s just say I left with a severely sprained ankle and I was not in the best of moods. But, time heals—as they say. And I had an entirely different experience this time around. And if you’ve been to this beach town before, I can promise you that this road trip we took will open your eyes to an entirely different side of San Diego.
I started my stay by checking into the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, which is located in the famous Gaslamp Quarter of downtown. If you’ve never stayed in one of their hotels and you are a lover or rock-n-roll, then you’re missing out. Around every corner, there are gems on display. Like a dress Madonna wore on tour to personally handwritten lyrics by the one and only Jimi Hendrix. They offer the ultimate rocker ambiance, if that’s what you’re into. It was a great place to start our urban adventure.
The first part of our road trip took us from Downtown San Diego to the historical town of Julian—about an hour’s drive. Where we just so happened to stop at the Julian Pie Company. I’m not even going to lie to you. This was hands down, the best piece of Apple Peach Crumb pie I have ever eaten. It was delicious! Make this a stop if you can. Your taste buds will thank you.
From there, we made our way to the Santa Fe Ysabel Preserve. Which was on the way to Borrego Springs, where we were having lunch at La Casa del Zorro Resort. As you’ll see below, I made a few furry friends along the way. This comfy 50 minute drive in the 2017 Kia Sportage led us from the scenic country to the seemingly barren Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. But, all is not what it seems.
I am by no means an artist, but I do appreciate the craft. So, the minute we went off-road in the Sportage and I laid eyes on Galleta Meadows Sky Art in Borrego Springs, I was in awe. These beautiful steel sculptures (a total of 140) surround the town and were a vision of the late Dennis Avery. He was the owner of Galleta Meadows Estate and he brought in artist Ricardo Breceda to work on the installation. I only got a chance to see a handful of the sculptures, but I’d love to return one day to see the rest. There’s a 350 foot serpent I need to visit.
