I grew up in a home where my dad was the key provider. My mom worked, but she didn’t bring in what my dad did. And although we lived paycheck to paycheck, we had everything we needed. My parents worked their butts off to make sure we had the basic necessities. I appreciated that more than they’ll ever know. They never spoke about finances in front of us or taught us about saving money. So, when I entered the working world at the age of 19, I was pretty clueless. I guess you can say I spent my money on things I really didn’t need. I had no idea of what it was like to budget or how to start saving responsibly. All of these things ran through my mind as I sat at Hispanicize’s Dime Summit listening to the Prudential #WomenInspired session.
I’ve had a few jobs in my life, but I’ve spent the last 8 years as an entrepreneur. I feel like I’ve been working on growing my career. But, I realized that I have been ignoring my personal growth on a different level—this includes my finances. This is a problem. And I think I would’ve remained oblivious to it all if it hadn’t have been for this panel. I know I need a mentor in my life, this is the first thing I’m going to look into. Guidance from an experienced person is always helpful.
Here are three things I learned about getting myself on the right track:
- The first step is to remain empowered and confident in all that I do.
- Next, I’m going to have to push myself to do more. This leads into educating myself and seeking solutions for any obstacles that get in my way.
- And during all of this, I must work on being and remaining fearless. I know it won’t be easy, since I’m only human, but fear will not win.
I truly feel like Prudential is providing a great service for women with this #WomenInspired campaign. During this session, I was so inspired by what Christina Shelling of Prudential and Cameka Smith of The BOSS Network were sharing with all of us. I hope it inspires you to achieve your goals and educate yourself.
